Day 1: Johannesburg to Thornybush
Fly from Johannesburg Int. Airport to Hoedspruit.
On arrival you are met and transferred by road to Thornybush Monwana Lodge for 2 nights including all meals, 2 game drives and walking safari daily.
On arrival you will be welcomed and requested to sign the register and indemnity forms. (The housekeepers will assist you with your luggage and take you to your room.)
Depending on arrival time you can enjoy either lunch or afternoon tea. In the late afternoon, depart on your first game drive.
You will set off into the bush on an exciting safari accompanied by a professional game ranger. At sunset, your rangers will stop off in the bush, where you will have a chance to enjoy your refreshing drinks, soak up the amazing silence and watch the sun sink into the dusty horizon. Continue on with the game drive after dark, using a powerful spotlight to point out nocturnal wildlife. The chances are excellent that you will encounter lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and many other species of game in their natural habitat. The vehicles go off the road, when necessary, to afford you the best possible viewing. The safari continues on into the dark when spotlights are used to follow the game. As most of the predators are nocturnal, this is the best time for viewing – especially as most hunting occurs at night.
Return to the lodge where you will have a chance to freshen up and meet in the bar for pre-dinner drinks. Dinner in the open-air, reed enclosed boma, under the stars, around a roaring log fire or in the dining room. Spend the evening with your ranger, talking about the African bush.
Day 2
Early morning wake up call followed by tea, coffee and biscuits served on the dining verandah.
Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to see most of the large mammals, so today you will enjoy an early morning game drive as well as a late afternoon/evening game drive. Animals which are mostly seen in the early morning include rhino, lion, leopard and giraffe. Lion are very active in the early morning and this is when you may see a pride on a kill or moving around with their young. As the day wears on, the animals usually retire to the shade of a tree or bush and may spend the best part of the day sleeping, only to emerge in the late afternoon or evening. Night-time is when the large carnivores – except wild dogs and cheetahs – do their hunting, and if you are lucky you may stumble on a kill.
After breakfast, walks are offered with an experienced armed tracker (these walks are subject to availability). Our knowledgeable guides and trackers will lead you on guided nature walks through the heart of the bush, revealing some of nature’s most closely guarded secrets. You will have a chance to experience the African bushveld close-up as you tread past intriguing plants and spy more elusive, smaller creatures such as birds, reptiles, insects and tiny mammals.
Return to the lodge for lunch and dinner. Depending on the time of year you visit, you might enjoy a breakfast or dinner in the bush.
